Welcome to End-Of-September.com, the website dedicated to home improvements that can help you to save money by reducing household bills. That might be more efficient heating, using less electricity, or getting better deals in general on your outgoings at home.

We’ve all been stretched in the pocket for the majority of the last decade, so we’re here to help you change all of that, by telling you about great ways to save a few quid, or taking advantage of the help available to improve your home.

One opening piece of advice is to try to forget about the advice you’ve heard before – we’re going to head off the beaten track a little to help you. We know that DIY and saving energy aren’t the most riveting subjects, so for once lets hope that putting together two negatives really do create a positive!

Saving Energy: Boiler Servicing The Cheap Way

If you’ve looked into reducing your energy bills, whether that’s by being more efficient or reducing energy loss, you’ll know that the solution is to apply many layers of improvements to get the best results. While every energy saving measure is worthwhile, when several or many are combined, the real magic happens. For example, knocking down a thermostat by a degree or two might save you ten percent or so on your energy bills, but combining that with draught excluders and loft insulation may result in much bigger savings, not to mention that you’ll feel less of an effect from turning down the heating.

Another great way to save energy that’s often overlooked is to make sure that you service your boiler regularly. By regularly, we mean annually, and the idea is that by having the recommended maintenance tasks completed on a manufacturer’s approved schedule, it’s likely to operate more efficiently that if it’s just left to run on its own year after year. Another great benefit from regular attention is that you’ll have an experienced gas engineer who’s able to spot problems before they happen. What’s more, once you’re committing to servicing regularly, you can opt for a good boiler cover contract instead. You might find that you can get any necessary repairs completed before anything goes seriously wrong, and that’s often cheaper than the required remedies after the fact.

If you want to look at some options for getting your boiler covered, there are a wide variety of comparison services on the web to help you choose the best one for your needs, such as Money Supermarket, or you could simply turn to one of the well known brands such as British Gas.

By reducing your energy use everyone wins. You pay less each month, the heating system works more effectively and there’s less pollution and use of fossil fuels. You could even go further and get solar panels too – that way you’re using less energy and generating it at the same time!

It’s been several years since the incandescent bulbs were phased out, and the uproar surrounding the ‘ugly’ energy saving bulbs has long died down. Now though, there’s another incarnation of energy saving bulb starting to appear everywhere. Starting with the factories around the country that save a huge amount of money when they become more efficient with their lighting (think thousands of bulbs!), it’s now becoming more common to see the technology in street lights and even homes!

You can save a fortune with these ultra low powered bulbs, so while the industrial world is raking in the savings, why not get a slice of the action yourself and power up your energy savings with the latest in low energy lighting technology. They can be used virtually anywhere in the home, ranging from full room lighting to shaving mirrors with integrated bulbs fixed to bathroom tiling.

Share The Wealth – Other’s Wealth!

You’ll probably remember the ‘Game Of Life’ from when you were a kid, and if you do, you’ll probably remember the ‘Share The Wealth’ cards that were the game’s answer to Monopoly’s Chance or Community Chest. I love the idea of sharing the wealth, especially when it’s someone else giving it away.

We’re talking about making your money go a little further, and as we said on the homepage, there’s a lot be to be done than just being careful with closing doors, turning off electricity and switching energy tariffs. We can also take advantage of people giving stuff away. The web is a hugely beneficial resource for the bargain hunter, but we want to go further – as freebie hunters!

For example, did you know you can get free food on the web? That’s just the start, as you can get all sorts of stuff, and it really gets interesting if you are prepared to put the time in to enter lots of contests. We’ve all seen the type of competitions to win vouchers that the big companies run in their stores and on TV, but if you go a little deeper, you can find similar opportunities to enter prize draws in their magazines or websites.

Even the energy savers are in on the act, with companies offering your bills paid for a year too. It obviously takes a bit of effort to enter lots of prize draws, but the more you enter the better your chances of winning something, and of course you can’t win unless you take the time to lodge your entry.

Here’s a quick way to find the current competitions that you can enter on the web – just return to this page and click the link whenever you want to find some more to enter:
